Description

The Ghiață Family Mansion – A Historic Jewel of Voluntari

The Ghiață family, originally from Mehedinți, is distinguished by a remarkable story intertwining art and architecture. The most famous member of the family, Dumitru Ghiață, was a painter who entered Bucharest’s artistic circles at the end of the 19th century, thanks to his friendship with Dr. Cantacuzino, who recognized his talent and introduced him to the painter Arthur Verona. This connection opened the doors of the capital to the entire family, bringing along his brother Mihai and his sister Anca.

In 1898, their father decided to build three houses around Bucharest as a symbol of their new beginning in the capital. This led to the construction of the mansion in Voluntari, completed in 1927, along with two other villas: one located just 150 meters away from the mansion (today’s no. 82, belonging to Anca Ghiață) and another one in Afumați, intended for the painter, although he never lived there.

The Ghiață Mansion – Witness to Romanian Art and Aviation

The house at Voluntari no. 80 was the residence of Mihai Ghiață and still preserves the early 20th-century architectural refinement, standing as a silent witness to an era dominated by art, culture, and an innovative spirit.

In 1957, the villa was purchased by aviation pilot Capbătut Boris, the first Romanian to complete a transatlantic flight on the Bucharest–Havana route. He is also recognized as the first pilot to take off from the newly inaugurated Otopeni Airport, on April 9, 1970.

Today, the Ghiață Mansion in Voluntari remains a discreet yet valuable landmark of local history, tied to two remarkable figures – a visionary painter and a pioneer of Romanian aviation – awaiting rediscovery and appreciation within Romania’s cultural heritage.

The house was built in 1898 and extended in 1927, preserving architectural elements typical of the early 20th century. The property underwent a full renovation in 2007, using high-quality materials. The roof was completely rebuilt, the walls reinforced with Buzău wire mesh, and the solid foundation reaches a depth of 8 meters, ensuring excellent stability.

The property includes a basement with generous height, and all installations (electrical, plumbing, and heating) are functional. The mansion combines historical character with a good level of structural comfort, making it suitable for various residential or functional purposes.

The estate covers a generous plot of 1,583 sqm, with a street frontage of 30.16 meters. The building has a constructed area of 723 sqm and is structured on four levels: basement, ground floor, attic, and loft.

Basement: includes a kitchen, a hall, a room, technical space, and storage.

Ground floor: consists of three rooms, a spacious hall with access to a closed terrace and an open terrace, two bathrooms, a guest toilet, and a dressing room.

Attic: includes two rooms and a bathroom, with the possibility of creating three additional rooms.

Loft: offers enough space for two more rooms.

In addition to the main building, the property includes a secondary structure, built on a single level (ground floor), consisting of two rooms, a bathroom, and a storage area – ideal as staff accommodation, office, or guest house.

There is also a separate garage, offering secure parking space.
